Speaker Biographies
Dr. Oren Mechanic is an Emergency Medicine attending at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He is an instructor at Harvard Medical School and serves as a Fellow of Health Policy and Management at Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians, focusing on health care innovation, delivery, and TeleHealth. Dr. Mechanic trained at the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency at
BIDMC and obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) at Dartmouth Medical School. While obtaining his MPH, Dr. Mechanic focused on health care operations and value-based health care delivery. During his residency training, he took part in Harvard Business School's Value-Based Health Care Delivery intensive seminars, designed for health care leaders. Dr. Mechanic has participated in the Physician Leadership Program, designed by health care leaders at the medical center and business school to
develop leadership skills surrounding quality, safety, and process improvement projects. Over recent years, his interests are in coordinating innovative approaches to healthcare delivery and telehealth endeavors within medical systems. Other interests include Emergency Department operations in order to provide timely and safe care to patients, specifically regarding syncope and observation medicine. He has been awarded a Harvard Medical School teaching award and is a core faculty member for the
clinical skills course.
Francis “FX” Campion serves as Principal Lead for Digital Health at MITRE with work focused on AI for healthcare, FHIR interoperability and the use of synthetic data for clinical modeling. He is a co-principal investigator for the COVID-19 Telehealth Impact Study. He serves as clinical consultant to the U.S. Government for the Federal COVID
Response for Therapeutics. He is a practicing internal medicine physician at Atrius Health in Boston. Prior to work at MITRE he served as Senior Clinical Informaticist at IBM Watson Health where his team built machine learning and natural language processing applications for care of patients with diabetes and heart failure. Prior to that he served as the Chief Medical Officer for Ayasdi, providing AI solutions for providers and payers. There he co-authored the book, “Machine Intelligence
for Healthcare.” He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed internal medicine residency at New England Deaconess Hospital and is now on the medical staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Tarun Mohan Lal currently works as a senior health services analyst within the Health Systems Engineering Program of the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern
Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery at Mayo Clinic. In this role, Lal’s work is primarily focused on the use of advanced analytics for surgical and patient scheduling for improved patient experience at reduced costs. Prior to this role, he worked with the internal business consulting team of Mayo Clinic as a health systems engineering analyst. Lal has also published several book chapters, articles and papers, and he is a very active volunteer in several industrial engineering
communities. He served in multiple roles on the SHS Conference Committee and is an active member of the SHS Membership Recognition Committee. He is going to chair the Institute of Industrial Engineers 2015 Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference and was recently elected treasurer for the analytics section of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. Lal has a B.S. in industrial engineering from Manipal University in India, and an M.S. in industrial engineering
from Texas A&M University. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in health systems engineering at State University of New York.
Currently based in Charleston, SC, Dr. Beju Shah earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2010. He then moved on to a clinical pharmacist role with the informatics team at MUSC Health, where he worked to
ensure safe and effective medication use by managing information systems, optimizing workflows and leveraging data to drive business decisions. During his time at an academic medical center, he also took up a position as an adjunct assistant professor and faculty advisor, bringing his extensive knowledge of healthcare information technology to learners. Since 2020, he has worked at startups in growth roles and, more recently, joined Doxy.me recently as part of their telehealth success
team.
