Umit Cali, MSc, PhD, has over 20 years of experience in both industry and academia. He is a Professor of Digital Engineering for Future Technologies at the University of York in the UK and holds a part-time professorship in Energy Informatics at NTNU in Norway. Professor Cali's research focuses on the intersection of legal tech,
cyber-physical-social systems (CPSS), digital engineering, digital health and energy informatics, integrating artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and digital twins. He has a PhD in electrical engineering and computer science and a Master of Law (LL.M.) in IT and IP Law. His expertise allows him to explore both technical and non-technical aspects of these fields, promoting innovation with an emphasis on responsibility and digital ethics. Throughout his career, Umit has worked globally
in academia and industry. At IBM International in Istanbul, Turkey, he served as a Communication and Network Engineer and Project Manager. He later became a Senior Researcher in Energy Informatics and Economics at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany. He has held advanced roles such as Chief Technology Officer at KREEN Renewables GmbH and Manager of Wind Energy Projects at EnBW in Germany.
Additionally, he
co-founded several high-tech startups in the United States, Switzerland and Estonia. He is also the author of more than 170 articles and three books on digital technologies and holds three US patents in blockchain technology. Umit is actively involved with the IEEE community, serving as a Senior Member and holding several leadership positions, including Chair of the IEEE Energy and Blockchain Technical Community, Chair of the IEEE Digital Privacy (Energy) Sub-committee, and Vice-Chair of the
IEEE Blockchain in Energy Standards Working Group (P2418.5).
