Tracing the Blockchain Challenges in Healthcare: A Topic Modeling and Bibliometric Analysis
Mohammad Mehraeen, Laya Mahmoudi
The application of blockchain technology to healthcare offers
solutions to key challenges related to data sharing, privacy, security, and access control. There are, however, several barriers preventing blockchain adoption from spreading widely, which has prompted increased scholarly research efforts.
This study has conducted a bibliometric analysis of 196 documents, indexed in the Scopus, to examine the structure, impact, contributors, and academic journals addressing blockchain
challenges in the healthcare marketplace has evolved since 2017. Topic modeling is applied to give new knowledge on the latent topical structure of this literature. As a result, five critical challenges have been identified regarding the use of blockchain in healthcare including data privacy/security, scalability, governance, interoperability and standards, and cost.
Findings demonstrate growing attention to this
research area, with a notable increasing number of publications in 2021–2023. Although the study is limited to Scopus journals, scholars and readers will find information on dominant topics, top authors, universities, countries, citations, journals, studies with the most citations, collaboration among researchers from different countries, and countries with the most publications – an interesting read for those in the global blockchain in healthcare research community.
